Aegean Airlines Gears up for Exciting 2020

Greek flag carrier Aegean Airlines transported almost 15 million passengers last year, an increase of 7% compared to 2018. Meanwhile, 2020 looks exciting for the airline as it announces several new routes and takes on further Airbus A320neo aircraft.

Aegean Airlines operates a narrowbody fleet consisting solely of Airbus aircraft. The carrier is the ‘Best Regional Airline in Europe’ and has kept that title for 9 consecutive years.

Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air have collectively recorded 14.991 million passengers up by 7% compared to 2018 during which the airlines transported 13.971 million passengers. Aegean also saw an increase in load-factor up by almost one percentage point at 84.80%.

Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of AEGEAN, said: “We achieved an 11% growth in international traffic and a 7% overall for 2019 by expanding our capacity mainly at the beginning and end of the traditional tourist season. We will continue to invest in expanding the tourist season and by offering enhanced quality services for our customers as this is at quest for achieving both sustainable development and growth for the company, tourism industry and the country."

2020 is an exciting year for Aegean Airlines as it launches several new routes and takes delivery of more Airbus A320neo family planes.

Aegean Airlines is targeting a 7.8% capacity growth for 2020 with the incorporation of 11 new routes and the enhancement of services driven by the arrival of further Airbus A320neo aircraft. Not only will the airline be launching a new base in Corfu, but it will also be expanding its existing services from Thessaloniki and Athens. Thessaloniki will see a 25% increase in capacity through the inclusion of 8 new destinations. Meanwhile in Athens, the airline will increase frequencies on some routes and launch flights to Bilbao, Birmingham, Nuremberg (Germany) and Paphos.

Gerogiannis said: “With 11 new routes, 1.5 million additional seats and 19.2 million seats in total, and of course with the addition of the first six A320neo family aircraft to our fleet, we create a new growth potential for our company.”

By the end of the first half of 2020, the carrier expects to have 6 Airbus A320neo aircraft in service. By the end of the year, however, the carrier says it will have 65 aircraft in service an increase of about 20%.
