Given the circumstances, Aeromexico announced that middle seats are now blocked on their fleet of Boeing 737s and 787s, a measure that seeks to preserve an atmosphere of “healthy distance” marked by Mexican sanitary rules to avoid the propagation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Likewise, given the configuration of their Embraer fleet, aisle seats are blocked on their Embraer E170s and E190s. It is important to point out that the airline set the grounds for what now is a domino effect of air companies which are taking action on the matter by the same means.
The Mexican flag-carrier has grounded a total of 86 aircraft and is now only operating commercial and cargo flights with 33 short-haul and 5 wide-body, long-haul airplanes. According to Andres Conesa, the airline´s CEO, the carrier reduced its capacity by 60% for international flights and by 50% for domestic flights leading to an expected operation of only 20% of their capacity for the month of April.
