FlyVLM used to be Belgium's biggest and only Fokker 50 operator. However, it's bankruptcy, which saw its base at Antwerp Airport face a significant drop in passenger numbers, didn't come unnoticed.
Antwerp International Airport is small, compared to its piers, such as Brussels-Zaventem and Brussels-Charleroi. Air Antwerp has risen as the successor to FlyVLM, the latter of which has went bankrupt more than once. Earlier today, OO-VLS became the carrier's first aircraft, a Fokker 50. The plane was flown in from Malmo in Sweden.
The carrier's major shareholders include KLM and Cityjet. The airline is expected to begin service to a number of European destinations, including London City from its Antwerp base - the route has been operated by a variety of airlines over the past few years, including Cityjet and FlyVLM. However, the carrier has not confirmed any route as of yet.J
ohan Maertens, ex-CEO of VLM, is also the chief executive at Air Antwerp.
