Air France-KLM said in a statement: “Air France-KLM continues to study global investment opportunities per its strategic goal to be an active yet pragmatic participant in industry consolidation, as presented at its Investors Day in November 2019.”

The group continued: “Air France-KLM had previously been in contact with Malaysia Airlines’ shareholders, but at this stage Air France-KLM is not a current party to the sales process of Malaysia Airlines.”

Meanwhile Japan Airlines is, according to Reuters sources, looking at a 25% stake in the national airline. Both Malaysia Airlines and Japan Airlines are part of the OneWorld airline alliance, while the Air France-KLM Group is part of SkyTeam.

Air France-KLM Group were said to have been interested in creating a maintenance, repair and overhaul services base in Malaysia, while Japan Airlines were reported to have been looking at making Malaysia a regional hub, building on the carrier’s existing agreements with the national airline.
