Air New Zealand, the flag carrier of the island country of New Zealand, has recently announced that it will begin direct commercial flights between Auckland and New York. The flight will, however, be operated out of Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey. This direct flight will operate three times a week on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, subject to final regulatory approvals and crew requirements.
This direct link between Auckland and the Big Apple will be launched on October 29th, 2020, just in time for this year’s holiday season. The flight time to New York will be 15 hours and 40 minutes, while the return leg will be completed in 17 hours and 40 minutes. The flights from Auckland bound for New York will depart Auckland at 19:55 hours and arrive in New York at 17:35 hours; where these timings may vary due to Daylight Savings Time adjustments.
The Boeing 787-9s will be retrofitted with a new cabin featuring a new business class, a premium economy, as well as Air New Zealand's economy SkyCouch and its new economy stretch legroom product. The SkyCouch will be somewhat similar to the ANA COUCHii on the ANA A380s.
This new route not only provides a direct link between New Zealand and New York, but also provides an alternative for Australian residents traveling to the Big Apple. They will have a choice to connect either from Los Angeles or Auckland and onwards to New York. The airline has already begun selling tickets for this brand new connection and allows purchase up to a year in advance. The fares go for approximately $1700 for a round-trip economy flight or a one way at around $847 or $885 depending on whether one is flying the outbound or inbound flight.
