Despite being a very small airline in comparison to its other European competitors, Air Serbia has announced some significant plans for expansion.
This includes some nine new destinations added to its route network as a result of a fleet expansion plan. From June this year, Air Serbia will/has already launched new services to Barcelona, Cairo, Helsinki, Kyiv, Krasnodar, Madrid and Rijeka from its Zagreb base while also introducing summer seasonal routes to Nice and Zadar.
Air Serbia CEO Duncan Naysmith: “This summer we will launch over 1,000 charter flights, dedicated to the Serbian public for their vacations. To bring that into context, during the summer period we will have an additional four aircraft in the air, which is a 20 per cent increase on last year.”
Just recently, news emerged that Montenegro Airlines would be building on its existing agreement with the Serbian flag carrier as it announced it would place its code on all the new routes mentioned above excluding Rijeka and Zadar. Montenegro Airlines has already included the following Air Serbia destinations into its route network: Amsterdam, Athens, Banja Luka, Beirut, Berlin, Brussels, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Larnaca, London, Milan, Moscow, New York, Paris, Podgorica, Prague, Sarajevo, Skopje, Sofia, St Petersburg, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Thessaloniki, Tivat, Zagreb and Zurich
Air Serbia is the national carrier of Serbia, with its main hub being in Belgrade. The carrier’s frequent flyer program is that of Etihad, as the latter holds a 49%, minority stake in the Serbian airline.
Air Serbia is said to be one of the only successful airlines Etihad has invested in, since others, such as Alitalia, airBerlin and Jet Airways, have all gone bankrupt. While Alitalia may still be in the air, its future is not looking too good.
