Airbus vs Embraer: AeroMexico To Order 60 New Airplanes

The “Eagle Knight” – Mexico's flag carrier – is getting ready to make a series of acquisitions in order to modernize its short-haul fleet which is now composed of members of the Brazilian manufacturer, “Embraer”; those of which are E170s and E190s.

The only premium airline in Mexico is about to choose between Embraer´s E195-E2 and Airbus' A220 – previously the Bombardier CSeries – according to its CEO Andrés Conesa. The order would be rounded up to approximately 60 new airplanes so as to renew the current fleet operated regionally. The airline has been analyzing this big order since 2017 and has been seeking to incorporate short-haul airplanes that are bigger in an initiative oriented mainly on increasing the capacity given the currently congested airport in Mexico City. All this, without the need to raise the number of daily flights. The Embraer E195-E2 would increase the capacity in about 25% in comparison to the current fleet, while the Airbus A220 would increase capacity by 35%.

“The lack of infrastructure makes it hard for us to increase our capacity to operate”, commented Conesa in an interview that was held at Bloomberg's office in the city. “The only plausible way for us to grow is with a bigger and newly modernized fleet”.

AeroMexico also operates Boeing's most popular airplane, the 737, without leaving out the brand new 737 MAX model which was sent to the freezer since last March given the two fatal incidents that happened within 5 months of each other. To choose Embraer over Airbus would mean to tighten up the airline's link that it has with Boeing. The company with headquarters in Chicago is about to take control upon the “commercial” side of the Brazilian company.

Delta Airlines who possesses a participation of around 49% in AeroMexico operates Airbus A220 airplanes.

Conesa mentioned that even though the prohibition of the 737 Max hasn't deteriorated the links between both companies, they are in fact looking for financial compensation regarding the matter.

If AeroMexico decides to go with Airbus, it would mark the first time in the history of the airline to ever choose an airplane made from a European manufacturer.
