In an internal email, American Airlines confirmed that it would be retiring all its Airbus A330s, in a move that would bring its long-haul aircraft fleet down to just two aircraft types.

American Airlines has, within the last week, announced major plans that would see its entire long-haul operation downsized to just the Boeing 777 and Boeing 787. This comes as a result of inevitable capacity cuts as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
Indeed, American Airlines originally announced, in terms of its long-haul fleet, that it would remove the Boeing 767, Boeing 757 and Airbus A330-300 from service. However, American Airlines has, in an internal email, confirmed that it would be retiring its Airbus A330-200s as well for at least 2 years.
The aircraft will be placed into long-term storage 'until at least 2022'. As a result of these changes, the Airbus A330 bases in Charlotte and Philadelphia will close.
The announcement comes amid 'the current depressed forecast for international demand' as well as 'no opportunities to profitably use the fleet domestically'. Last week, American Airlines reported a $2.2 billion net loss for the first quarter of 2020.
