Earlier this year, American Airlines announced a seasonal route from Philadelphia to Casablanca, which is set to begin on June 4. The airline has announced plans to codeshare with Royal Air Maroc, via Casablanca. Both airlines are awaiting approval for this deal, which will greatly increase American's presence in Africa. If this deal is approved, American will gain 34 destinations in Africa, growing from an airline with no African presence to one of the leading contenders for Americans going to Africa.
American Airlines is not the only airline that has been expanding into Africa. Earlier this year, United announced a seasonal flight from Newark to Cape Town, becoming the only airline to offer a nonstop flight there. United also has a codeshare deal with the struggling South African Airways, giving them a strong presence in Southern Africa. Delta also currently has codeshares with Kenya Airways and a flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg. This move by American will allow them to open up a new continent, and this will allow them to continue being a major player within the industry.
