Austrian Airlines has announced it will resume operations on 3 May, instead of the planned 19 April.
This isn’t the first time the carrier prolonged its shutdown, having announced similar measures on 23 March when it extended the suspension to last until 19 April instead of the initially planned 28 March.
Inevitably, due to “travel restrictions,” Austrian Airlines has also postponed the launch of its new Boston route, which would begin in June.
Austrian Airlines CCO, Andreas Otto, warned that this extension may not be the last. “The precise time when regular flight operations are resumed, remains to be seen and depends more on the underlying conditions than on us.”
Otto continued: “We continue to stand ready for a new and slow relaunch. It goes without saying that we will continue to carry out our repatriation and freight flights for medical supplies”
Over the last couple of weeks, Austrian Airlines operated a number of repatriation flights on behalf of the Austrian government. The carrier said it transported more than 6000 passengers and moved 180 tons of medical masks, suits and gloves to Vienna from China and Malaysia.
On Sunday we reported that Austrian Airlines was operating a direct service between Vienna and Sydney. This ferry flight, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER, returned to Vienna, Austria via Penang, Malaysia with repatriates on board. The outbound service to Sydney was the longest ever flight the carrier has operated in its more than 60 year history.
