We've come across a familiar trend here in the last few months: Delta and their airline partnerships. First, it was the start of a new codeshare agreement and possible alliance partner with the purchase of LATAM, then they strengthened their agreements with Air France-KLM to further streamline connections to and from North America and Europe, and now with Vietnam Airlines.
An official announcement coming from the Delta stated that they have already begun adding Delta codes on Vietnam Airlines flights to and from Hanoi (HAN/VVNB) connecting through Tokyo Haneda airport (HND/RJTT) since February 12th. This new codeshare agreement will allow customers on Delta’s current flights from Minneapolis (MSP/KMSP) and Los Angeles (LAX/KLAX) to Tokyo-Haneda to connect to Vietnam Airlines’ flights from Haneda to Hanoi.
The scheduled date for the complete consolidation of Delta flights to Tokyo Haneda from Narita, (NRT/RJAA) will be completed by March 29th. Once this happens, all Delta customers from the remaining North American cities of Atlanta (ATL/KATL), Detroit (DTW/KDTW), Seattle (SEA/KSEA), Portland (PDX/KPDX), and Honolulu (HNL/PHNL), in addition to the two cities of Los Angeles and Minneapolis, that were previously servicing to Tokyo-Haneda, can connect to Vietnam Airlines’ Hanoi flights. Vietnam Airlines will also add their codes to all Delta flights to/from Haneda.
Perry Cantarutti, Senior Vice President-Alliances at Delta Air Lines said in an official statement “This is going to be a transformative year for Delta in Japan as we consolidate our services in Haneda next month,” “The partnership with fellow SkyTeam member Vietnam Airlines, further strengthens Delta’s position in Haneda as the largest U.S. airline, while enhancing connectivity between the two countries.”
Delta originally had a one-way codeshare agreement with Vietnam Airlines when it joined SkyTeam alliance back in 2010 and operated codeshare flights to U.S. cities from Tokyo-Narita airport. Since the Federal Aviation Administration granted Vietnam a Category 1 rating under the agency’s International Aviation Safety Assessment program in 2019, Delta will become the first U.S. carrier to place code on a Vietnamese carrier.
