EGYPT AIR has taken delivery of its first Airbus A220 aircraft, handed over to representatives of the airline at Airbus' plant in Montreal. This delivery marked the first of 12 A220s destined for the Egyptian flag carrier. It has become the first A220 operator based in the Middle East and North African region (MENA), and the sixth operator worldwide.
At the delivery event in Montreal, CEO and Chairman of Egypt Air, Ahmed Adel said: "We are proud to welcome our very first A220 aircraft and to be the first airline in the Middle East and North African region to take delivery and launch commercial operations of the A220 - the most innovative and technologically advanced aircraft in the world".
The airline had initially ordered the aircraft as the Bombardier CS300. However, the aircraftwas later rebranded to the Airbus A220 after Airbus agreed to acquire a majority stake of 50.01% in the C-Series program back in 2017. The aircraft will be operated by Egypt Air’s regional arm, Egypt Air Express which currently has 10 Embraer ERJ-170s in service.
The Airbus A220 comes in a 2-3 layout, and is aimed at the 100-150 seat aircraft market. Egypt Air’s Airbus A220 aircraft will be equipped with 140 seats. This comprises 15 premium economy seats alongside 125 standard economy seats. The aircraft is aimed at delivering unbeatable fuel efficiency and wide-body passenger comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 has Pratt & Whitney's latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines which offer approximately 20 percent lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. The Cairo-based airline intends to fly the aircraft on routes to and from its main Egyptian Hub in Cairo in the coming days.
