Having aspired to attain flag carrier status, Air Italy’s growth was predominately focused on bringing passengers quality, affordable and modern service. The carrier rebranded and began taking delivery of state-of-the-art aircraft, such as Boeing 737 MAX jets as well as Airbus A330s.

In cooperation with partner, Qatar Airways (49% shareholder), the carrier’s growth was significant. Alitalia, which had and continues to be hugely indebted, struggled to fight back.
However, the carrier’s finances struggled to keep up with its growth and on 11 February, 2020, Air Italy ceased operations.
AeroNewsX now learns that its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX’s are to take to the skies one final time.
A source, who asked not to be named, told AeroNewsX that the carrier’s three Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will be flown to Budapest for maintenance and eventually storage until taken up by another operator.
The first aircraft is already on its way, operating as IG7031. The first plane is registered EI-GFY.
Air Italy’s 2 remaining Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, stored at Milan Malpensa, will also be sent to Budapest.
However, with the Boeing 737 MAX grounded worldwide, the likelihood of it quickly being taken up by another airline is very low.
"The redesign of the airplane is not just limited to changing MCAS functionality," FAA Administrator, Stephen Dickson says.
He adds: “The entire flight control system – Boeing undertook this in the June-July time frame of last year – became a much more ambitious project."
