FedEx MD11 overshoots runway at Mumbai

On 3 June 2020, a McDonnell Douglas 11 freighter aircraft belonging to FedEx endured a runway incursion at Mumbai International Airport. The aircraft was operating FedEx flight 5033 from Bangalore and landed on runway 14/32. A video shot by someone near the airport shows how the aircraft skidded off the runway.

The weather conditions during that time were bad as Mumbai was bracing for Cyclone Nisarga, the worst it has ever experienced. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) had to halt its operation for almost 4 hours following the incident. This didn’t disrupt its flight operations, however, as in view of the cyclone, CSMIA had prepared a curtailed operation of just 19 flights.

In a statement, a Mumbai International Airport Ltd spokesperson said: “CSMIA witnessed a runway excursion today with FedEx flight 5033 arriving from Bengaluru. The incident occurred when the MD11 aircraft landed on runway 14/32. The aircraft was towed away from the runway and there has been no disruption in flight operations.”

The airport operator added, in consultation with the AAI, considering the strong crosswinds, it was decided that no arrivals and departures would take place between 14:30 and 19:00. Mumbai airport has previously witnessed runway incursions almost every monsoon season.

On 1 July, 2019, a SpiceJet flight operating between Jaipur and Mumbai had skidded off the main runway. The plane could only be removed from the mud three days later due to the unavailability of equipment.
