A report by Smart Aviation Asia-Pacific suggests that Garuda Indonesia is looking to phase out its fleet of Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft.
Introduced earlier this decade, the CRJ1000 has been a key player in Garuda Indonesia's regional connectivity.
However, the carrier is now reportedly unsatisfied with the type. An airline executive told Smart Aviation Asia-Pacific that Garuda was not happy with the lack of product support in Asia nor the plane's inability to operate at airports with shorter runways.
A total of 63 Bombardier CRJ1000s have been produced of which Garuda operates 18.
The whole point of the CRJ1000 was to help improve Garuda Indonesia's regional connectivity within Indonesia. Unfortunately, the type has not been able to satisfy the carrier's needs. According to the executive, the airline is looking to sell the CRJ1000s to an American carrier, as the type is better suited there.
Last year, Garuda was reportedly considering transferring its fleet of CRJ1000s to low-cost subsidiary Citilink.
Headquartered in Jakarta, Garuda is Indonesia's flag carrier. According to SkyTrax, Garuda Indonesia is a five star airline, and operates a fleet of over 140 aircraft. The airline has recently had a few issues, mainly related to the Boeing 737 MAX. The aircraft type was involved in two major accidents killing more than 300 people, grounding it worldwide. Having taken delivery of one already, Garuda Indonesia cancelled the remaining 49 aircraft on order. Meanwhile, the carrier has just recently received its first Airbus A330-900neo.
