Lithuanian charter and ACMI service-provider, GetJet Airlines, has signed a short-term contract with Sunwing Airlines for the wet-lease of an Airbus A319. For GetJet this marks their first time operating in Canada. The Airbus A319 began service with Sunwing on September 2.
GetJet's CEO, Darius Viltrakis, said: "Canada is a new strategic destination for us - until now we have mostly been operating in Europe. Entering the Canadian market has been a long-term goal for GetJet Airlines, and one for which we have been preparing carefully and thoroughly. This partnership will strengthen our position in the international market, and we are excited to embark on further expansion in North America after this very promising beginning."
As Darius Viltrakis mentioned, the airline did a lot of preparation before starting operations in Canada as foreign airlines operating in Canada are strictly regulated by Canada's Civil Aviation Authority. GetJet's AOC and adherence to strict requirements allowed them to strike a deal with Sunwing Airlines which requires more planes to compensate for a lack of capacity after the 737 MAX series was grounded worldwide .
Announcements like this show that following the worldwide 737 MAX grounding and problems with Trent 1000 engines on Boeing 787s, GetJet has found itself in a perfect position to offer their wet-lease services. Having struck deals for their A330 with Tunisair and LOT, this shows GetJet's commitment to quality and operational success. As such, the airline has also been looking to expand by acquiring more narrow and wide-body aircraft.
