India’s largest airline, IndiGo, ended the decade with a bang when it took delivery of 4 brand new aircraft from Toulouse, France on December 31st 2019. This delivery included three Airbus A321neos and one Airbus A320neo, adding to its massive all-Airbus fleet. The airline has the largest fleet of any Indian carrier, now standing at over 250 aircraft, and also operates the maximum number of flights allowed in the country.
IndiGo has been one of the most ambitious airlines in the region, which has resulted in its rapid growth and success. It adds an average of one aircraft per week to its fleet, making it one of the fastest growing airlines in the Asia-Pacific Region.
The airline also recently signed a code-share agreement with Qatar Airways, marking another step in its expansion plan. It also plans to soon expand further westward to London and is currently weighing different options for these flights, with the hope to start flying to London by mid-2020. Although IndiGo initially planned to operate this route using the recently ordered A321XLRs, IndiGo has changed its plans and announced that it would lease a few wide-body aircraft for this route. They intend to introduce a business class to these planes too.
Ronojoy Dutta, IndiGo’s CEO said in an interview with The Hindu, “If you want to do Mumbai-London we have to do widebodies and we need a business class — that’s one decision we have made. If we go all-economy, we can’t make the numbers work. The answer is a small business class and a dense economy. How big the business class should be – we have sized it, we have the answer to that.”
IndiGo has the largest domestic market share in India at 47%, and, with about 1500 flights every day, the IndiGo blue is a common sight at nearly every Indian airport.
