Figures from the end of March show that the carrier had a total of 23,531, of which 3,187 were pilots and 6,248 cabin crew.

In a statement, CEO Ronojoy Dutta said: “From where things stand currently, it is impossible for our company to fly through this economic storm without making some sacrifices, in order to sustain our business operations.”

Dutta continued: “Therefore, after carefully assessing and reviewing all possible scenarios, it is clear that we will need to bid a painful adieu to 10% of our workforce. It is for the first time in the history of IndiGo that we have undertaken such a painful measure.”

The pandemic hasn’t stopped IndiGo from taking delivery of a large amount of new aircraft in recent weeks, however. As we reported on 9 July, the carrier’s aggressive expansion is being maintained, with deliveries of brand new A320neo family jets continuing.
