Brussels Airlines’ entire short and medium haul fleet will feature the Eurowings livery in the coming years as both carriers continue their integration project.
Confirmed in a report by airliners.de, Brussels Airlines short haul fleet consisting of Airbus A319s and Airbus A320s will operate under Eurowings branding. This comes following the Lufthansa Group’s acquisition of Brussels Airlines back in 2016, which saw the Belgian flag carrier being integrated into subsidiary, the Eurowings Group.
With a number of long-haul planes already operating for Eurowings out of its bases in Dusseldorf, Germany, for example, the first short/medium-haul aircraft in Eurowings livery is expected to roll out but continue to fly for Brussels Airlines on June 15.
The first aircraft is an Airbus A320 of which AeroNewsX has been able to confirm the registration as OO-SNN. The aircraft was previously owned by Lauda Air and has flown for the likes of Air Berlin as well. Touching down earlier last week at Brussels Airport OO-SNN became the 17th Airbus A320 for Brussels Airlines.
While the plane is to fly under Eurowings branding, Brussels Airlines will continue to fly the plane using their crew.
The Eurowings-Brussels Airlines situation has gotten clearer over the past few months: To put it simply, Brussels Airlines will continue to operate its long haul flights under its own name, while the short and medium haul flights will all be transferred to Eurowings. Brussels Airlines says, and rightly so, that its name does not fit with a network based all around Europe – for example on flights from Dusseldorf to Palma de Mallorca.
However, Brussels Airlines’ name in Africa is far more significant than that of Eurowings with the airline telling us that they are a ‘company specialised in African destinations’.
Brussels Airlines is at its final years. With the Eurowings Group continuing to takeover, what will become of the Brussels Airlines that many Belgians once knew and loved.
