Japan’s newest low-cost carrier, Zipair Tokyo, operated its inaugural flight to Bangkok on Wednesday, carrying only cargo as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The airline initially had plans to operate the inaugural passenger flight on May 14th, only to be stopped by the current travel restrictions in force and a drop in passenger demand as a result.
ZG51, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed Tokyo-Narita Wednesday evening and arrived in Bangkok at 9:43 PM local time. According to the nippon.com, the flight was carrying machine components and chemical products, totalling about 13 tons in weight. The aircraft is expected to fly cargo on its return leg back to Tokyo as ZG52.
The airline’s President Shinago Nishida has stated that the airline would definitely consider increasing flights based on the future travel demand in the industry.
The passenger schedule has yet to be decided and announced by the new airline. As for now, the airline, a subsidiary of flag carrier Japan Airlines, is set to operate 4 round-trip services between Tokyo and Bangkok.
The airline was founded in 2018 as a low-cost alternative in the Japanese aviation market, with the main goal of operating medium to long-haul international flights. The airline has since taken deliveries of two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, leased from parent company Japan Airlines.
