Lithuania-based KlasJet has partnered with Bluebird Nordic, a cargo airline based in Iceland in order to operate cargo flights. In so doing, KlasJet hopes to transport larger amounts of medical supplies, personal protective equipment and other essential goods required during this time of crisis globally. This would be in addition to KlasJet's already existent private and corporate charter services, of which it boasts the largest Boeing 737-VIP fleet worldwide.
The flights will be operated by Bluebird Nordic's newly acquired Boeing 737-300 cargo aircraft named after the falcon 'Merlin'. This, according to KlasJet's CEO Rita Domkute, represent the firm's admiration for the bird's visionary power, wisdom, and guardianship.
This move by KlasJet comes at a time when global demand for the service brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic is rising. According to the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Director General Alexandre de Juniac, there is not enough capacity globally to meet the remaining demand for air cargo due to a capacity decrease of 23% in 2020 as compared to 2019. KlasJet's move is therefore in line with the current market demands, and serves to diversify the carrier's existent repatriation and humanitarian flights during this period.
In March 2020, KlasJet's parent company, Avia Solutions Group, finalized a transaction in which it acquired a 100% stake in Bluebird Nordic, which at the time had a fleet of six cargo aircraft consisting of one 737-300SF and five 737-400SF aircraft.
