Qantas will conclude their Boeing 747-400/400ER operations to the United States mainland when it replaces the Queen of the Skies with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Sydney-San Francisco route in December 2019.
According to schedules on the Qantas website, the carrier currently serves San Francisco six times per week using Boeing 747-400/400ER equipment from its hub at Sydney Kingsford Smith, which will be replaced by the Dreamliner from December 4th 2019, on the QF73/74 rotation.
Although the Boeing 787-9 is more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly, the equipment down-gauge presented a 24% reduction in available one-way seats per week with 2,184 seats per week on the 747 compared to 1,652 on the 787.
However, Qantas international acting Chief Executive said the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was the “most comfortable aircraft” in the fleet due to being equipped with the airline’s latest jetlag-reducing cabin products featuring the new state-of-the-art Business class suites.
This switch is part of Qantas’ 747 retirement scheme which will see all Boeing 747s in the fleet withdrawn and replaced by the 787 by 2020.
