Qantas has launched a new service between San Francisco and Brisbane with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. AeroNewsX was invited to take part in the inaugural ceremony.
The route was announced back in mid-June along with a connection to Chicago launching later this year.
On 9 February, 2020, the first Brisbane to San Francisco flight was launched with a Boeing 787-9. The aircraft was registered VH-ZNI and made it to San Francisco five minutes late.
Qantas Regional Manager for Queensland, Elsa Dalessio, described the new route as a “much needed boost for tourism in our state”.
The new service means 110,000 new seats will be added directly into Brisbane creating an expected $67 million for the local economy.
Minister for State Development, Cameron Dick, said that the tourism industry “has been very badly hit by the coronavirus outbreak” and added that they “worked very hard as a state to secure the four Qantas Dreamliners based here in Brisbane to create those jobs, those thousands of seats, and those opportunities for hundreds of workers that will now work in and around that Dreamliner base.”
The service takes approximately 12 hours and 40 minutes across a distance of 11,367 km. The new route brings the total number of connections between San Francisco and Australia with Qantas to 14 weekly flights.
