Smartwings and flydubai have agreed to extend the wet lease of Boeing 737-800 aircraft for operations on the UAE based carrier's network. The initial contract had stipulated the lease of 4 Smartwings aircraft from 14th December 2019 to 25th January 2020. From now on, Smartwings will lease two 737s at least until the end of February.
“We have extended the contract until 29 February on two aircraft. We are discussing the possibility of further business cooperation,” said Smartwings spokeswoman Vladimíra Dufková. According to the flydubai reservation system, Smartwings is expected until the end of March. The flights operated by Smartwings still do not appear as an Emirates codeshare, which is flydubai’s partner.
Flydubai decided to lease aircraft from other carriers due to the grounding of 737 MAX aircraft. Smartwings also suffered due to the grounding, but during the winter season the demand for flights from the Czech Republic is not immense and it therefore leases part of its capacity abroad, for example Canada, or the already mentioned UAE.
In the case of flydubai, it is a so-called ACMI lease (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance), where the Czech carrier provides not only an aircraft but also crew members, and handles issues related to maintenance and insurance.
