The Aeroméxico-Emirates Battle: Barcelona to Mexico City

Last year, Emirates announced that they would begin flying to Mexico city in late 2018. But in September 2018 Emirates cancelled the plans as they weren't granted the necessary slots. However, in 2019 Emirates announced that they've been given the slots and therefore they're launching the route to Mexico City soon.

Emirates Airline has announced a new route to Mexico City via Barcelona. Emirates will start flights to Mexico City on the 9 December, 2019 on a Boeing 777-200LR. The Emirates Boeing 777-200LR has 38 seats in Business Class in a 2-2-2 configuration and 264 Economy Class seats in 3-4-3 configuration.

Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline said: “We are excited to be able to introduce new air connectivity between Dubai and Mexico. The availability of high-quality, daily international air services is essential for the development of tourism, business and cultural ties. Trade, especially in high-value and time-sensitive products, will be facilitated by the ample cargo capacity on Emirates’ Boeing 777 aircraft. We also expect tourism to receive a major boost from the daily flights on our newly-refurbished Boeing 777-200LR.”

Why Barcelona?

Sir Tim Clark added: "Due to the high altitude of Mexico City airport, it is not possible to operate a non-stop flight from Dubai, and Barcelona was a natural choice for a stopover. We are pleased to offer a direct connection on the route between the Spanish city and Mexico City that has long been neglected by other airlines and remains underserved despite the strong customer demand. We would like to thank the authorities and our partners in both Spain and Mexico for their support of the new route and look forward to provide our unique product and award-winning service to travellers."

Emirates will become the first Gulf carrier to fly to Mexico and Central America. Additionally Emirates is going to become the 43rd international carrier to fly to Mexico City International Airport.

Flight Details

Flight EK255 will takeoff from Dubai at 3:30am local and will land at Barcelona at 8:00am before departing for Mexico city at 9:55am and and arriving at Mexico City by 16:15pm. Aeroméxico, the flag carrier of Mexico, tried to legally prevent Emirates from launching flights to Mexico. After Emirates announced flights to Mexico City, Aeroméxico revealed their intention to fly 3 times a week to the Spanish city of Barcelona from June 2019 on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. They now do so, flying direct between the two cities since June 15, 2019.
