Air France-KLM Group’s low cost subsidiary, Transavia, plans to launch flights from Brussels-Zaventem International Airport. The airline, which currently has a large fleet of Boeing 737s, will be using Brussels as a new base.
Despite heavy competition from Ryanair (and of course Belgian flag carrier Brussels Airlines), Transavia will initially base 2 aircraft at Brussels-Zaventem during the 2020 Summer season.
The new announcement comes at a time of uncertainty for airlines at Amsterdam Schiphol, namely KLM and Transavia, as the airport reaches its full capacity. With the lack of available space to grow, and slots becoming evermore expensive, Transavia has decided to branch out to nearby Brussels.
Solutions for Amsterdam Schiphol have already been discussed and authorities decided to open ‘Lelystad Airport’ for commercial activities. However, whether the plans will go ahead, remains unknown as political issues continue to delay the project.
Transavia has decided to move away from Amsterdam to pursue its growth. The airline says that it has a lot of customers from Brussels which would usually travel to an airport in the Netherlands. Normally, the airline would have turned to those airports for growth, namely Eindhoven, but unfortunately Eindhoven is also full.
The carrier will begin with a daily link to Amsterdam from Brussels, but also has plans to initiate flights to various destinations in the Mediterranean, a spokesperson revealed to De Telegraaf.
